Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media. According to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age of 16 are defiled every day in the country.

They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.

The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine.

Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarmingly high.

Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups [Light For Children Ghana] working to stop the practice, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.

For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.

The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.

Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.

This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.

There are instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.

Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.

Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.

Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

Popular Ghana-based actress Emelia Brobbey has been arrested for stealing a piece of bracelet jewelry while shopping during her vacation in London.

According to information from reliable sources, the talented actress who is unaware of the security camera at the store allegedly stole a bracelet.

As she was exiting the store, a beep alerted the people around her.

We learnt the guys on the security camera who have been monitoring her movements came out to ensure her arrest.

Police officials were called in and she was asked to provide her address.

The actress gave the officers the address of her host, fellow actress Gloria Agyeman.

Police immediately raided the home of the ‘thief’ actress’s host, Gloria.

The raid led to the arrest of another actress Eunice Akua Adjeiwaa who had overstayed in the United Kingdom.

She was immediately arrested. Eunice is set to be deported back to Ghana.

Emelia Brobbey who caused the whole mess is set to leave London today after she was given an immediate departure order from the UK.

OMG this beautiful babe has brought a lot of shame on herself and ghana.

"I'm almost betting that another allegation will come up.This is not a very important issue.We need to focus on those issues,not her committed prance mistake & after the headline fades,it almost seems a non-issue at the state of our economy.Fans today are more likely to forgive and even re-admire her more unless the scandal involved gross corruption or misuse of public funds,when politician wld be forced to leave office.
Maybe the time has come to accept that some Ghanaian politicians are flawed,but that doesn't necessarily exclude some from a productive political career.Emelia's case will soon go away,not with the incredible access technology gives us into personal lives of our neighbors around the globe.
Our attitudes need 2 change because we are all once a victim.We are a forgiving nation if one will recollect the historical background of our dear country Ghana...

This is barbaric, to think of that in this day and age people still want to give their under age daughters hand in marriage instead of going to school and making decisions for themselves. I can't believe this case even will go to the extent of being debated as a law, shame on all those who made this decision. As an a human being I think we need to ask ourselves if we think kids under 18 can not vote then they should not be in a marriage that they do not want to be in religion or no religion. It is a shame and a cry for help for all these girls who go through this. May God and Allah change the hearts and minds of these people to make the right decision, not to make this a law.
