Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has proposed that farmers' children should receive free university education to encourage more young people to enter agriculture and help increase food production in the country.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the musician said the government could introduce the policy as an additional benefit for farmers, especially since free education is already available at the basic and senior high school levels.

He explained that covering university expenses for farmers' children would reduce the financial burden on their families and give more young people the opportunity to pursue higher education.

Okyeame Kwame noted that getting the younger generation interested in farming remains a challenge.

According to him, many farmers struggle to encourage their children to follow in their footsteps because the profession does not offer enough incentives to make it attractive.

He also raised concerns about Ghana's dependence on imported food products, including onions, saying the situation shows the need to improve local food production.

The musician believes that allowing farmers' children to attend university for free could help address some of these challenges.

He said the opportunity would enable them to gain knowledge and learn about modern technologies that could be used to improve farming methods and increase productivity.

“When we were growing up we had the farmers scholarship. I don’t know where it has passed. Now primary education is free, secondary education is free. But I think that to encourage farmers, university education should also be free for farmers’ children.

“At this point of our economy, we still import onions from a deserted country. We still import a lot of different types of food. Why is it like that? It’s because farmers do not feel encouraged to tell their children to also be farmers,” he said.

He further explained that agriculture is essential to national development because food production supports other industries and contributes to the daily activities of people across the country.
