Nigerian content creator, public speaker, and HIV awareness advocate Chika Wonder, whose real name is Chika Ekezie, has candidly shared how his past lifestyle may have contributed to him contracting HIV.

Speaking during an episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast on August 4, 2026, Chika reflected on his younger years, admitting that he struggled with sex addiction and frequently engaged in unprotected sex with multiple partners.

According to him, although no one can be completely certain how they contract HIV, he believes his infection was largely a result of his reckless sexual behaviour.

"Nobody really knows how they contract HIV. You might think it's from one means, but it might be from something else. With the way I lived my life back then, I can say that it's through unprotected intimacy with different people," he said.

Chika revealed that he had little regard for whom he had sexual encounters with, admitting that satisfying his desires was his only concern at the time.

"When I was very young, I was reckless. I had a sex addiction and I was not disciplined when it came to sex. I was the kind of guy that if I went to any state for the first time, the only thing I asked people was where the closest brothel was,” he stated.

He continued, “I just wanted to sleep with anybody and the truth is, I didn’t even have a spec. If I can afford you and you agree with the price, I don’t care if your head is somehow, I will still want to do whatever I wanted to do.”

He further disclosed that when he could not afford to pay for sex, he resorted to masturbation, adding that he eventually realised his behaviour had become compulsive.

"When I didn't have money to sleep with someone, masturbation was an option. I knew it was a problem when I realised I could masturbate anywhere or wherever I found myself. I could be in a church and when a lady is wearing like a tight skirt and I could see her pant lines, I would have an erection and excuse myself to the church washroom to masturbate," he recounted.

Chika also explained that his work as a photographer exposed him to different environments and experiences, which, combined with his lack of self-control, increased the risks he took.

"After having that kind of lifestyle plus the fact that I was also a photographer, I was exposed to so many things. Reckless sex might be like 80% of how I got HIV. Discipline is what makes some people use protection, but I wasn't disciplined. I wanted to feel the pleasure and I was careless about what the outcome might be," he shared.

He added that he rarely pursued committed relationships because he lacked the confidence to do so, making paid sexual encounters his preferred option at the time.

"Relationships weren't my thing because I wasn't a courageous guy. Paying for intimacy was my only option then," he added.
