Legendary African musician Miatta Fahnbulleh has disclosed that she was one of the many African women captivated by the charm of Ghana's late President Jerry John Rawlings.

She described him as a "fine boy" whom many women dreamed about.

Speaking to media personality Kafui Dey, Fahnbulleh said she became a staunch admirer of Rawlings from the moment he appeared on the scene but did not get the opportunity to meet him until 1987.

“From 1979, when Jerry Rawlings came on the scene, I was a nutcase. I mean, the fact that he was fine. Any African woman who tells me that in 1979 she didn’t look at Jerry and dream, I would tell her she’s a liar. He was a fine boy but I did not get to meet him until 1987. I followed everything. We were the Jerry fanatics out there,” she said.

Fahnbulleh added that her admiration for Rawlings often irritated some of her Ghanaian friends, particularly those who opposed his government politically.

“A couple of my Ghanaian friends used to get pissed off with me, those on the opposite end of the regime. I said, ‘Look, I’m not here for Ghana politics. I just see a fine pilot I like.’ That’s how JFK won the election in America. He was a fine boy. Barack Obama won too,” she noted.

Jerry John Rawlings was a military officer, fighter pilot and politician. He served as Ghana's military Head of State from 1981 to 1992 before becoming the country's democratically elected President, serving two constitutional terms from January 7, 1993, to January 7, 2001.

Rawlings died in November 2020, at the age of 73 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
