Ghanaian media personality and comedian Afia Schwarzenegger has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to secure the release of broadcaster and parliamentary aspirant Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah following his arrest.
Her comments come after a GhanaWeb report detailing allegations by Okatakyie's campaign team that some constituency officials printed their own ballot papers and attempted to proceed with the suspended NPP constituency executive elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency despite a court injunction.
Reacting to the report in an Instagram video on July 13, 2026, Afia Schwarzenegger appealed to the party's leadership to intervene, warning that she would publicly criticise them if they failed to act.
"I want to tell the leadership of the NPP that it is in their own interest to release Okatakyie Afrifa. I'm urging everyone who matters in the party to ensure his release. Otherwise, once I get to my studio and set up my camera, I will insult every one of them," she said.
'Officials allegedly printed own ballot papers for NPP election' - Inside details of Okatakyie's arrest
Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was reportedly arrested by officers of the Ashanti North Regional Police Command on Sunday morning.
According to a statement from his communications team, the arrest came after the team alleged that some constituency officials had printed their own ballot papers and prepared electoral materials to conduct a constituency executive election despite a suspension directive from the NPP National Steering Committee and an interim injunction issued by the High Court in Kumasi.
The statement further claimed that the election was organised in defiance of the party's directive to halt the process pending the determination of an ongoing court case.
