Media personality Vim Lady has weighed in on the arrest of Ghanaian social media personality Abu Trica, stating that his decision to grant a television interview after his arrest may have weakened his legal position.

Speaking in a video shared on social media on July 12, 2026, Vim Lady said Abu Trica had the right to remain silent after his arrest and should have avoided making public comments about the allegations against him.

According to her, both Ghana’s Constitution and the American legal system recognise the right of an accused person to remain silent, adding that anything a suspect says voluntarily could later be used as evidence in court.

“We can all learn something from Abu Trica’s case. Under Ghana’s Constitution, you have the right to decide not to speak when you are arrested. The officers must explain why you have been arrested so you know the charges against you,” she said.

She noted that after Abu Trica was arrested by US authorities, he also had the right to remain silent, but instead chose to grant an interview on TV3.

“Since he went on TV to grant an interview, the Americans can use whatever he said against him in a court of law. It is up to the court to decide whether to admit it as evidence, but the FBI can add those statements to their case,” she explained.

Vim Lady further pointed out that during the interview, Abu Trica admitted to receiving part of the money at the centre of the investigation, arguing that such an admission could make it easier for prosecutors to build their case.

“When he went on TV3, he admitted that he received some of the money. You did not have to prove anything or defend yourself because the FBI would now work around those statements to prove their case. If they already had some evidence against you, you have now given them additional material to support their case,” she stated.

She added that prosecutors would ordinarily have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Abu Trica was involved in the alleged romance scam and money laundering offences, but his public comments could complicate his defence.

“They had to prove to the court beyond reasonable doubt that you were involved in a romance scam and money laundering if you had not admitted it in the interview,” she said.

Vim Lady also questioned whether the social media personality sought legal advice before agreeing to the interview.

“I don’t know if he consulted his lawyer before he had the interview, but he should not have done that interview. You have made your family and your lawyer sad,” she remarked.

Addressing concerns over the involvement of the FBI in the arrest, Vim Lady dismissed suggestions that the US agency has policing powers in Ghana.

According to her, Ghana remains a sovereign state, but the FBI works with Ghanaian law enforcement agencies, including the Ghana Police Service and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), on cases involving alleged crimes against US citizens.

“Those asking why the FBI could come and make an arrest in Ghana should know that they never said they have power in Ghana. They are only interested in cases where someone commits an offence against Americans, and Abu Trica confirmed that the money he received came from an American. They have a working relationship with the Ghana Police and EOCO, and this is not the first time someone has been arrested in Ghana through such cooperation,” she noted.

She further urged the public to allow the legal process in the United States to take its course.

“Let’s wait and see how the legal process in America will play out for him,” she added.
