The grave of Monica Amekoafia, the country's first 'Miss Ghana', who was crowned in 1957, has reportedly fallen into a state of neglect.

Photos of her tomb in Hohoe in the Volta Region, showed that it was surrounded by overgrown bushes, in a Facebook post sighted by GhanaWeb on July 8, 2026.

The post lamented the condition of the burial site, noting that Amekoafia's contribution to Ghana's cultural history deserves greater recognition.

"As the woman whose contestant number; ‘Number 9’ became the iconic nickname for the people of the Volta Region, her contribution to Ghana's cultural history deserves far greater recognition. Her final resting place should not be allowed to deteriorate," caption to the post read.

It further urged authorities to preserve the site as a national heritage and tourism destination, where contestants and winners of the Miss Ghana pageant could visit to pay tribute to the pioneer who paved the way for generations of Ghanaian beauty queens.

According to the post, preserving Monica Amekoafia's legacy would not only honour a remarkable woman but also safeguard an important chapter of Ghana's history while inspiring future generations.
