Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston just to name a few. The masters are worth millions of dollars and it will be very difficult for Sony Records to let go once they signed you on their record label.

Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston did not die mysterious deaths. Michael died from an over dose of Propofol administered by his private physician, and that was due to the negligence of the physician who was willing to please him by doing things that were not the norm in medical practice. Whitney died from an overdose of narcotics, an overdose that very likely caused her to drown in a bathtub, and her abuse of narcotics had been going on for some time. There was nothing mysterious about the deaths of these two huge talents, nor did their deaths have anything to do with their contractual issues regarding their masters.
Most new artists usually have less bargaining power when negotiating their contracts, and the more powerful music houses simply let new artists sign one-sided contracts, contracts that later become difficult to untangle, though some artists eventually succeed in shaking off the masters shackles. All musicians should have the right to their masters. Ray Charles, who started his music career in the 1950's as poor young man, is one of the few artists who successfully negotiated early in his career to have control over his masters, and that move made Ray a wealthy man. Best of luck to Davido, for he needs to have the rights to the product of his talent, those masters. The music company will squeeze blood out of his bank account, but it's worth it to give up some money in exchange for those masters.
