Ghanaian actress Portia Asare has shared her thoughts on the newly launched GH¢20 million movie industry fund, describing it as a timely and important intervention for Ghana’s film sector.
Speaking on the initiative, the Kumawood star said the fund is something actors and filmmakers in Ghana have anticipated for decades, adding that she believes it will go a long way in strengthening the movie industry.
“It is a very good initiative, like some of our elders said, this is something we have been looking forward to for decades, so now that it is finally here, I believe it will help strengthen the industry greatly,” she said.
According to Portia Asare, the establishment of the fund has also given industry players a renewed sense of belonging and recognition.

“For me, it creates a sense of belongingness It shows that what actors and filmmakers are doing is being seen and appreciated,” she added.
The actress further urged Ghanaian filmmakers to focus on telling authentic Ghanaian stories instead of heavily relying on foreign-inspired content.
“We need to tell our own Ghanaian stories because that is who we are and that is what strengthens us as Ghanaians,” she stated.
Portia Asare expressed concern over the growing influence of foreign stories on Ghanaian youth, warning that the country risks losing its cultural identity if local stories are not preserved through film.
“The youth are now being influenced by foreign stories, so this is the time for Ghanaians to tell our stories well to educate the younger generation. If not, a time will come when Ghanaian culture could completely go extinct with no trace,” she cautioned.
Her comments come after the launch of the government-backed GH¢20 million film development fund aimed at supporting and revitalising Ghana’s movie industry.
