I don’t like celebrating birthdays — Edem

Ghanaian rapper Edem has revealed that he is not enthusiastic about birthday celebrations, explaining that he usually prefers to spend the day in quiet reflection.

According to the award-winning musician, his birthdays are more about expressing gratitude for life than throwing parties or making public announcements.

Speaking in an interview with Godwin Namboh on TV3 on May 19, 2026, Edem stated that he often chooses to stay low-key on his special day.

“I’m not a big fan of birthdays. Usually, in the past on my birthdays, nobody got to hear of me. I go to a quiet place and stay low-key,” he said.

He noted that his main focus during such moments is to appreciate the gift of life, which he believes is the foundation for everything else.

“Most importantly, I’m always grateful for life because without that, nothing else really matters,” he stated.

You have to work twice as hard when you rap in a ‘minority language’ – Edem

Edem explained that as his profile has grown, his team has encouraged him to mark his birthdays more publicly as part of maintaining his brand.

“Over time, my team is always pushing for some celebration. Once you become a brand, it’s like you must make everything a big deal,” he shared.

The rapper also shared his unique perspective on age and maturity, arguing that people only begin to truly understand life after turning 18.

“There’s a reason why they call anybody from when they were born to 17 a minor. You’re a minor because your life really begins when you’re 18,” he noted.

Using his analogy, Edem described a 20-year-old as merely a “two-year-old adult,” suggesting that real understanding comes much later in life.

According to him, it is only after the ages of 35 to 40 that individuals have accumulated enough experiences to fully understand themselves, build meaningful relationships and navigate life with confidence.

“That’s when you would have grown to become an adult to really understand life. When you turn 20, you are actually just a 2-year-old adult. By the time you pass 35-40, for me, is when you’ve gathered all the experiences from those 18 years,” he said.

Edem added, “You’re able to equip yourself to be able to start your life journey. You would know what you like and dislike, personalities that you work with, you would have built amazing relationships and everybody after that is just an acquaintance.”
