Charterhouse needs an 'Avengers' team to fix the TGMAs - DJ Mensah

Ghanaian disc jockey DJ Mensah has called on Charterhouse to bring in a dream team of industry veterans to overhaul the production and structure of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

According to him, the scheme has outgrown its current format and now carries the weight of a national entertainment responsibility.

In a Facebook post on May 13, 2026, following the 27th edition of the awards, DJ Mensah praised Charterhouse for sustaining the platform for nearly three decades, but insisted that the same consistency that had kept the TGMAs alive must now be matched by a willingness to evolve.

"The awards have grown beyond being just another event. At this point, it has become a national entertainment responsibility… The company honestly deserves to be studied for keeping this platform alive and relevant for nearly three decades. But growth also means evolution," he wrote.

DJ Mensah pointed to a set of recurring complaints that he said had followed the awards year after year, long hours, disorganised performance arrangements, overcrowded red carpets, audience fatigue and production errors, arguing that the cycle needed to be broken.

"Every year, the conversations remain almost the same …. long hours, poor pacing, poor performance arrangement, overcrowded red carpets, audience fatigue, production errors, yet somehow the cycle continues.

“No guest should realistically sit from 7PM till almost 4AM at an award show. The energy drops, the audience become tired, performances lose impact and the experience starts feeling exhausting instead of exciting," he said.

He also called for a more structured and prestigious red carpet experience, noting that the current format often felt overcrowded and lacked a clear sense of exclusivity.

“The red carpet also needs more structure and prestige. At times, it feels overcrowded and unclear who exactly should be there,” he said.

To address these issues, DJ Mensah proposed what he described as an "Avengers" team, a group of industry heavyweights he believes could transform the experience.

His nominations included Fred Darko, David Bossman, George Quaye, Bana Sadiq and Kojo Soboh, all of whom he noted either had prior experience working with Charterhouse or possessed a deep understanding of the system.

“These are people who can add to production, branding, audience experience, culture and modern entertainment direction to further strengthen what the scheme is already doing already.

"As much as they all have their own companies and responsibilities to run, I genuinely believe they would still take on this task simply to give back to the industry," he wrote.

DJ Mensah ended his post by arguing that Ghana's world-class talent deserved a platform that continuously evolved to match that same standard.

“Ghanaian talent is world class. The platform celebrating that talent should continuously evolve to match that same level,” he concluded.
