Celebrated Ghanaian artiste Black Sherif has shared the inspiration and story behind his latest release, Popstar.

He has opened up on the commitment it took to bring the track to life.

The song, which has quickly gained traction and topped charts since its release a few weeks ago, reflects the resilience of his journey from humble beginnings to global recognition.

In a recent interview with Kafui Dey, the 'Iron Boy' hitmaker revealed that he recorded 'Popstar' during his first trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, with his team, including producer Joker. Prior to the trip, he said they had the beat ready but no lyrics in mind.

Blacko said upon arrival, the team set up a makeshift studio in Joker’s hotel room. He said after touring the city on his first day, he returned inspired and immediately recorded the track.

“It was our first time in Johannesburg together, me, Joker, and Farouk. We had the beat three days before the flight. Joker had a small setup in his room. I tried to work on the song in the morning, but couldn’t. After we went out, I came back straight to Joker’s room to finish the song because that was how I was feeling. The spirit I gathered from the township inspired me,” he narrated.

He said while recording, he had to lower his voice because other hotel residents complained about the noise.

“I had to chill because someone called the hostel to report the noise. That’s why the song is cool like that. Normally, if I record at home, I shout. But I liked how smooth it sounded, so I said this should come out,” he explained.

Black Sherif emphasised that although he usually takes outdoor recordings to the studio for perfection, this time he kept the raw hotel room version because it captured the authentic feel of the moment.
