Ghanaian photography duo Samuel Appiah Gyan and Emmanuel Appiah Gyan, popularly known as Twinsdntbeg, have opened up about the painful experience that inspired their brand name and the principle it continues to represent.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment, the twin brothers revealed that “Twinsdntbeg” was born out of pain and rejection during their early days of pursuing music.
According to them, the defining moment came when a music producer they approached looked down on them, an experience that was not new to them.
Why photographers can command the world’s most powerful people - Twinsdontbeg explain
“At the time, we were doing music, we had a few demos, and we put them on a CD, then we started going to producers because we have the talent, so they should listen to us and see if we would be able to do something with what we have.
"I remember we took the CD to one producer somewhere around Lapaz. After he listened to it, his comment was as if you people sing in the bathroom, you feel you can be good musicians; so, he was actually referring to us as bathroom singers,” explaining that repeated rejections over time became overwhelming and ultimately pushed them to their breaking point.
Following that experience, the duo said they made a firm and conscious decision never to beg anyone for opportunities or assistance again, a mindset that directly inspired their name.
"That comment really broke us. Right after that comment, it was a feeling of rejection, it was a feeling of pain, but we decided that we were not going to beg anymore because we realised that in Ghana when you need something from people, they need you to always be around them trying to get their attention and trying to beg for opportunities, so we decided to call ourselves the twins who don't beg anybody. We would work hard to achieve whatever we want in life."
Beyond just a name, they explained that “Twinsdntbeg” has since become a guiding principle in their lives and career.
They disclosed that the name serves as a “checking stick” that constantly keeps them in line, ensuring they do not deviate from the decision they made during that difficult period.
"What we also realised was that the name we put on ourselves put us on the pedestal, not to rely on individuals but rather rely on ourselves and our God, and that took us to places."
The pair added that their journey and growth have validated that decision, stating that today, they no longer have to beg anyone for any form of help or support.
They emphasised that the name continues to remind them of their beginnings and the resilience that has shaped their transition from music into photography.
