Veteran actor Paa George, who has lived in Accra for more than 54 years and has been acting for over three decades, has revealed that he has been unable to build a house in the city and has been renting since 1963.
In an interview on Max FM, Paa George explained that while his family owns a house, it is located outside Accra.
He said, since moving to the capital to pursue acting, he has had no choice but to rent.
He further shared the financial challenges actors faced in the early days of Ghana’s movie industry.
According to him, acting did not generate huge income at the time, and the money only began to flow later.
He said, by then, he had a family to support, and the funds he could have used to build a house were instead spent on his children’s university education and family needs.
Veteran actor Paa George debunks death rumours
“I still rent in Accra; I don’t own a house. I was unable to build one because where would we even have gotten the money from? We did the work out of passion. There is a family house, but it’s not even in Accra, so since I came to Accra, I have been renting.
"I have lived in Accra since 1963 and have been renting from then till 2026. There was no real money in acting for those of us who started earlier. The money only started coming later, and by then we already had families and responsibilities. I had to pay university fees for my children, so the money I could have used to build a house was what I used to take care of their education,” he stated.
Paa George, born on May 10, 1937, is one of Ghana’s longest-serving screen personalities.
He began his acting career in 1963 and gained recognition through the popular ‘Concert Party’ performances, where he shared the stage with notable names such as Agya Ntow, Bob Vans, Lord Bob Cole, and Appiah Agyekum.
Paa George was also a member of the Ebibiman drama group, solidifying his reputation in Ghana’s theatre scene.
In the 2000s, he experienced renewed mainstream prominence in the Ghanaian movie industry, starring in numerous films alongside actors such as Agya Koo, Mercy Asiedu, Nana Ama McBrown, Kyeiwaa, Michael Afranie, and Bill Asamoah.
“I do not have a house in Accra. I’ve been renting in Accra since 1963 till date.”
