If there are no toxicology tests done by the doctors, then there is no firm basis for making such serious allegations against anybody much less against a relative. Such baseless accusations would not stand in a court of law and could result in very serious consequences for the accuser. Furthermore, many Ghanaians are quick to attribute setbacks to "spiritual" attacks. Most of these allegations are unfounded and lead to great distress for some family members or friends who get wrongfully accused of malevolent intentions.
I PERSONALLY KNOW A FEW OUTRAGEOUS CASES IN WHICH KINDHEARTED INDIVIDUALS WHO OFFERED MATERIAL HELP TO A NEEDY RELATIVE OR FRIEND GOT ACCUSED OF TRYING TO “SPIRITUALLY KILL” THEM - I witnessed one such episode a few decades ago. A kind woman who was a grains trader in the 1980s decided to send a load of provisions to a very needy relative living in the capital because his family was struggling during the very difficult economic climate that prevailed in Ghana in the early 1980s. The needy relative refused to take the gifts because he claimed that the donor was trying to kill his family "spiritually”. The kind lady for years did not understand why she never received any expression of gratitude from her struggling relative. Many years later she told me with tears in her eyes how shocked and hurt she was when she discovered that that her sacrificial gifts had been rejected by her relative who simply disposed off the food items by giving it to strangers because she feared that this kind lady was using the food to attack his family "spiritually".
A lot of this kind of nonsense is propagated by some of our "Africanised" churches who seem increasingly to mix elements of traditional religion, superstition and Christianity in the same pot. These are the churches whose staple diet includes very large dollops of preachings and sermons about witches etc.
For sure these evil forces exist but it is plain wrong to generate fear and suspicion in congregants who often end up targeting elderly relatives who are behaving oddly because of cognitive decline that comes with aging.
