Why go to Manhyia — to celebrate, to remember, or to look away?
If we’re honest, visiting royal sites forces us to confront a complicated past: the Ashanti state was a powerful political and economic force whose expansion involved warfare, subjugation, and participation in slave trading. These are uncomfortable truths, but glossing over them risks romanticizing a history that also caused real suffering.
When voices like Wode Maya’s try to surface these issues, the backlash is revealing: we’re often unequipped for public conversations that mix pride with culpability. At the same time, Akan-speaking peoples have undeniably shaped Ghana’s social and economic in a negative way , which raises another tension — how do we balance respect for a proud cultural identity with critical historical reflection?
Empires rise and fall; many have left legacies that are both constructive and destructive. A mature reckoning would include rigorous history, public dialogue, education, and spaces for remembrance that acknowledge victims as well as achievements. If we can sit with the discomfort, we have a chance to build a shared narrative that’s honest, restorative, and forward-looking.
