  Most of our boarding schools would qualify to be called "Boot Camp" in many Western countries. You were woken up at the crack of dawn, had a cold shower (if you were lucky to have running water), had thin runny porridge with unidentified objects floating in it. The bread served in the dining hall made bread sold on the streets taste like something from heaven. Gari served in the dining hall varied widely in flavour, texture, smell and appearance from day to day. Black-eyed beans on your plate housed tiny black creatures sometimes clearly visible protruding out a small opening on the bean. Most of the time you only discerned their presence because of the change in the flavour of the when you chewed your Gari and beans. (we used to joke that these weevils increased the protein content of our diet) - If you were prudent, you never closely examined the contents of your dinner plate. The smart ones amongst us smuggled Shito (strong pepper sauce) into the dining hall- this really helped to mask the constantly changing strange flavours and tastes of the gari, beans, kenkey and bread. "Butter" served with bread was a strange yellow salty blob of grease. I later discovered the taste of real butter many years later when I was invited to a wedding dinner in an Accra Hotel. In boarding school most of us were just too hungry afford to be picky about the menu. The lucky ones amongst us had "homemade" brought in by relatively well-to-do parents over the weekends.

  The man's point is that the boarding school experience for most of us was a "Boot Camp" of sorts. It prepared most of us to cope with the extreme pressures and challenges that were to come later in life both in Ghana and abroad. This experience trained many to be self-reliant, develop tenacity, cope with adversity, develop the mental fortitude and the ability to adapt to changing circumstance so that even when they moved abroad to live and work they were better able to cope, survive and even thrive in a harsh and often hostile environment (as a person of colour)

  Perhaps his prison experience is making him a better person. For some it make them appreciate more their freedom and the opportunities the outside world has to offer them.For others it becomes the beginning of a self-destructive cycle after release from prison as they allow themselves to be dragged into a life of more crime drugs and other antisocial vices.
