  What DKB is saying is true. There are certain bacteria in river bodies which can consume or transfer metals. This process is called bioremediation. These bacteria can either absorb the metals into their cells known as bioaccumulation.
  Some bacteria can produce substances that can cause metals to precipitate out of the water ; effectively removing the metals from the contaminated water.
