Besides sponsorships brings in a lot more in exchange for publicity mileage and tie ins at the gates for a range of product sales so I'm finding it hard to understand what drove you to even write this article. What you term as an ego trip on the part of performing artists is really and truly a strategy to enhance their craft, image and business which unfortunately leaves the like if event promoters behind and in their old state of thinking they're the best thing since sliced cheese. In this day and age if event promoters want to stifle artists, remember artiste wants to do more for themselves too and what may seem to you like an ego trip is rather what snowballs into successful artistes self funded, part funded or sponsored events curated by the artists who understands the business of music.... I could go on but I'll stop here - just remember times have changed a what you describe as ego trips I a brewing artist powerhouse thinking.
