All those atrocities and and maltreatment against kids should be ceased forever. Old timer like you should keep quiet, if you don't have any progressive ideas.

  There is a balance to everything. Same way a minority abuse children when flogging, some parents overindulge their kids to the point of spoiling them.
  
  As a teacher at a cambridge school, I can’t begin to express how spoilt and entitled many children of these well-to-do parents are. Discipline is concentrated in the hands of a single person, which is the head teacher. The punishments a teacher can make use of include a reprimand, making the learner stand at the back of the class, and making them write several lines of text. Any further action is taken by the head teacher and includes detention and suspension.
  
  Now look, the kids have no reverence for the teachers, they use the periods of “less important” subjects or times which could have been spent studying to write their lines, and when you suspend a child, they would have missed a lot of lessons, which compounds the problem.
  
  All this when a few whips, sometimes a single one, suffices to redress misdemeanor.
  
  The parents are overwhelmed by the behaviors of their kids at home and look to teachers to straighten them up. Unfortunately it doesn’t work because once foundational discipline is lacking, teachers can only do so much.
  
  Applying the rod is a swift and effective measure to curb indiscipline. While we as Africans want to “catch up” with the developed world, our way of thinking is several years behind so following blindly is just so wrong.
