In recent memory, the existence of God and metaphysical realities is attributed to superstition by those who consider themselves better educated and/or sophisticated in their thinking. The care with which people accorded their families and how people treated the subject of witchcraft is now in the dustbin of yesteryear. If you can't see it, it doesn't exist--so they say--while falling prey to the exact same thing. Sure, not everything should be relegated to unseen forces, but in our neck of the woods, people dying at the hands of witchcraft and evil machinations is the norm until there's evidence to the contrary. In my tiny and uneducated brain, of course.
