  If only more young men and women paid much closer attention to their choice of a potential husband or wife (spouse) then more marriages would endure and thrive.
  I remember some decades ago while I was still a student hearing the pastor of the Church I was attending announcing that he, his wife and the Church elders were arranging a Courtship and Marriage Seminar for those between 12 and 18 years. There was a ripple of laughter in church at this announcement because until that time all Pre-Marriage seminars and talks were aimed at those above the age of 18 years. It was obvious that many in the congregation felt that courtship and marriage matters was “too early” for that age group. Our soft-spoken Pastor patiently explained to us all that the choice of a good marriage partner was influenced by the values and beliefs acquired by children and young persons during their formative years. He stressed the role of parents at even earlier age groups, the role of extended family and the important part the local Church could play in shaping the values and character of the younger generation. He correctly believed that helping kids as young as 12 years to acquire the right values was critical in shaping their character. A well-rounded character would be more likely to make good choices in life. Parents and other close relatives had the most important part to play as ROLE MODELS. Looking back now after some decades I can see how true this Pastor’s views were. These Pre-marriage and Courtship Seminars and Talks were moderated by several SEASONED MARRIED COUPLES who were excellent role models (not because they were saints as such but because they had successfully weathered the storms and challenges that are a normal part of any marriage while raising their families ) .
  The Pre-Marriage Seminar Panel members frequently referenced their own struggles, pitfalls, and triumphs over many years of marriage. They had survived and thrived because they gave priority to:
  1.Being committed and faithful to one to one another and taking active steps to prevent outsiders interfering with their marriage (They did this by building hedges and boundaries around their marriage) They believed that marriage was for life.
  2.They persevered and worked out their differences over time while making sometimes painful adjustments to each other. They learned to be unselfish, gentle, kind, considerate, truthful, and sensitive to their spouse’s feelings and needs. They were therefore able to GROW TOGETHER AS A COUPLE RESULTING IN MARRIAGES THAT GREW STRONGER WITH TIME.
  3. Most of the Marriage Counsellors or Seminar panellists started out in their marriages with little material possessions but through discipline, learning to economize (being frugal) they saved and planned. They practiced DELAYED GRATIFICATION- i.e. they delayed buying things they wanted but could not afford or which would make it difficult for them to save for the future. One couple delayed buying a car for 10 years and they bought no new clothing during the same period!
  4.They planned strategically for their future by enrolling on courses that would help them improve their earning power. They set realistic targets and goals for 5,10 or 15 years and adjusted as required.
  5.They took steps to prevent interference from certain extended family members and friends and learned earlier on during their marriage to maintain their financial and emotional independence as much as possible. One couple moved to another town in order to prevent interference by a “domineering” ,” gossipy” and “busy body” mother in-law and another couple disciplined themselves to stop running to their parents to discuss their disagreements as this only complicated their problems and led to terrible gossip and nearly cost them their marriage.
