I am not sure that I want to describe marriage as a "bed of thorny roses" but I get your point. As someone who has been married for longer than you I only partly agree with you. Yes commitment from both partners, shared values, unselfishness, consideration and respect for the other, a readiness to forgive and above all a fear and reverence for God are the critical characteristics of marriage that is GROWING and MATURING. That does not mean that some issues, some unpleasant character traits do not linger on but many disappear or become less an issue as both partners grow and mature emotionally and spiritually. The great news is that contentment is very possible in marriage. This happens with time as both sides become MORE patient, more considerate to the other, become more sensitive to the needs of the other, work for the good of the other. It is clear to me that Van Vicker and spouse have discovered this secret and no doubt will continue to work on it. Theirs is a refreshing testimony. In fact the best part of marriage is when a husband and wife become each other's best friend. That is when after several years ,even decades you can't bear to be apart for long. Your husband or your wife becomes truly one with you, your "soul-mate". He or she becomes the one you turn to when you are troubled or anxious. The one you can wake up at 2am to talk to about something on your mind or something you are anxious about and who LISTENS TO YOU and then PRAYS with you.
LOOKING BACK I SEE MARRIAGE MORE AS A BUILDING PROJECT(anybody who has undertaken this knows the problems, frustrations and unexpected setbacks that you can face) and you have to stick with it to get that beautiful house eventually. For sure in a growing marriage there will be ups and downs but THINGS DO GET BETTER as both of you invest time and effort and prayer into the marriage. Maybe it starts as a "bed of thorny roses" but with time most or all of those thorns fall off leaving only the wonderful fragrance of "roses" as you continue to rely on God for direction, for courage and for wisdom to make the marriage work.
A successful marriage (i.e. one where partners have endured all sorts of trials, tribulations and setbacks but have persevered and sincerely sought to please God and their spouse) are a POWERFUL TESTIMONY to their children ,other extended family members, friends and the community they live in.
I know a number of couples who have been married for 50 and even 60 years. Some of these couples came from very different backgrounds ,culturally or racially. They all discovered the secret of contentment and longevity in marriage and most were people of faith.
INDEED "LOVE TRUMPS ALL" but love is a building project that demands, perseverance , constant investment, sacrifice, courage, patience and focus. And the end result is absolutely phenomenal- PEACE,CONTENTMENT AND THE WONDERFUL KNOWLEDGE THAT GOD HAS BEEN WITH YOU IN THE MARATHON THAT MARRIAGE IS FROM START TO THE PRESENT.
