Reminds me of a "client" living in a European country with strong employee protection legislation who came to see me about some personal issues and during the consultation attributed some of his stress to the way some work colleagues and some supervisors viewed him. He felt that he was constantly being picked upon and discriminated against in subtle ways because of his nose and ear rings and blue tinged spiky hair. He worked at a Budget Hotel belonging to one of the largest chains in the hospitality industry.
His employers according to him seemed to be looking for any opportunity to get rid of him because they felt that he was putting off regular guests with his appearance more so as it was a hotel chain noted for its loyal clientele, most of whom were older and conservative in their social outlook and tastes. He was under incredible stress as he felt he was constantly being monitored so that they could find a valid reason to fire/sack him even though they could not fault the quality of his work per se.
We explored his options. Several months later he perhaps rather wisely decided to go and work in an environment that was more forgiving of his particular appearance- he chose to work nights in a nearby casino.
