Personal Anecdotes are useful for illustrating biblical principle but must never be a substitute for deep exposition of the Word of God.
I think this Preacher may have been trying to show that spoiling one's children can impact the quality of their relationship with others particularly in marriage. Spoilt children tend to grow up into narcisistic,selfish individuals that are a nightmare to live with or work with. A selfish man or woman is often incapable of appreciating the needs and feelings of their spouse or fellow workers. It is always about themselves, WHAT THEY WANT,WHAT THEY FEEL ETC. IT IS ME ME ME ALL THE WAY. WORSHIPPING OR IDOLIZING YOUR CHILDREN, SPOILING THEM BY GIVING THEM WHATEVER THEY WANT,WHENEVER THEY WANT IT AND INDULGING THEIR EVERY WHIM IS ACTUALLY CURSING THEM FOR LIFE.You could say that children raised this way are DEFINITELY NOT "A BLESSING FROM THE LORD".
Parents are the ones responsible for turning the soft clay of their growing childrens character into a something that will make them a BLESSING FROM THE LORD AND A BLESSING TO OTHERS. ONCE CHILDREN ARE GROWN UP THE CLAY OF THEIR PERSONALITY AND CHARACTER IS VIRTUALLY SET HARD AND BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO REMODEL EXCEPT BY THE GRACE OF GOD.
