UK Prize Winners Call On Sports Minister

Accra (GAR), July 14, - A 17-member winners of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award International from Staffordshire, United Kingdom, today paid a courtesy call on Mr Enock Teye Mensah, Minister of Yout Their three-week familiarisation tour forms part of an exchange protocol between the Head of Sate Awards winners of Ghana and that of Staffordshire. Welcoming the team, Colonel Isaac Rockson, Chairman of the Head of State Award Scheme, said the visit is to expose them to the ''rich Ghanaian cultural heritage.'' He expressed the hope that by this visit the two parties would understand and appreciate each other's problem to help promote world peace. Mr Mensah was confident that by their visit, the team will put the ignorance of the past behind them and give way to what pertains in the contemporary times. He noted that most of the young ones have been misinformed and made to believe that Africans live on trees, adding ''it is better to see once than to be told a hundred times''. Col. E. K. Nawura, Chairman of the National Youth Council, called on them to maximize this exchange programme'' adding, ''by this you will be able to reach a compromise at international forums.'' The head of state award was introduced in Ghana in 1963 for people between the ages of 14 and 25 years. It seeks to unearth talents and how best young people can use their leisure time to benefit their individual communities.
