President Rawlings tasks accountants

The President, Flt. Lt. Rawlings, recently asked the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ghana (ICA) to set up a committee to monitor the activities of its members and map out areas in which they can help the growth of the national economy.

He said business in general and accountancy in particular have become sophisticated with the introduction of computers which make it easy to circumvent the law.

He said as a professional body, the ICA should be able to stem any such tendency in the practice of the profession in Ghana. President Rawlings made the call when the Council of the ICA called on him at the Castle, Osu in Accra.

The President also called on the accountants to assist the govt in finding solutions to the problems that have arisen as a result of the implementation of the VAT system.

He commended the ICA for localising the training and examining of accountants in Ghana.

Mr Nathan Quao, a special assistant to the President said the ICA has a responsibility to do some research on how accountancy relates to Ghana's peculiar environment.
