On August 14th, fourteen of us left Accra chasing a route most people never take.

On August 23rd, we came home.

And the homecoming had a homecoming of its own: CFAO Mobility Ghana, the partner that put us on the road in the first place, hosted the whole team at their offices to welcome us back.

There was something poetic about it. The journey began with their vehicles and ended in their house. Sitting there with the team, dusty stories still fresh, I finally let myself feel what I had been too busy to feel on the road: we actually did it.

What we did

Let me put some numbers to this dream.
Ten days. Multiple regions: Greater Accra through the Volta Region, across the ferry at Dambai, up to Tamale, deeper to Wa, all the way to Bolgatanga near the roof of Ghana, and back. Twenty solid activities. About 90% of our itinerary completed, and if you know how ambitious that itinerary was, and how many times I abandoned it to chase something unplanned, 90% is a small miracle.

We fished with fishermen. We danced with Borborbor drummers and were welcomed by dance troupes in the North. We ziplined, crossed water with vehicles on a ferry, stood inside world-class art spaces in the savannah, and filmed a version of Ghana that most people, including most Ghanaians, have never seen. We made the journey fun. We made it memorable. And we brought back content that will let thousands of people travel this route through our eyes.

But here is the truth about expeditions: routes don’t make journeys. People do.

What the North taught me

I went looking for hidden places. I found them. But the thing I’m bringing home is bigger than any location.

Everywhere we went, before anyone asked who we were or what we wanted, we were welcomed. With drums. With dance. With open doors. The distance between the South and the North of this country is not measured in kilometers.

It’s measured in assumptions, and every single one of mine got smaller as the road went on.

The North is not far. The roads are good. August is kind. And the welcome is waiting.
