Ghanaian musician Twitch has opened up on his decision to part ways with his former record label, Ground Up Chale.

He said although life as an independent artiste is difficult, he could not stay in a situation where he was being “cheated.”

Speaking during a livestream interview with Made in Ghana, the artiste was asked why he left the label despite admitting that being independent comes with several challenges.

Responding, Twitch said the difficulties of going independent do not justify remaining in an unfair arrangement.

“That’s a very good question, but in as much as being an independent artiste is very difficult, it doesn’t mean someone should cheat you without getting anything in return. A lot of artistes are doing foolish work but they don’t know, so by the time they realize, it would be too late, but you have to continue. However, being independent is different,” he said.

Earlier in the interview, Twitch admitted that he finds it difficult to comment on the state of Ghana’s music industry because many musicians now operate independently.

“I don’t know what I’ll say about the Ghana music industry because everybody is independent. From where I am at, I don’t know anything,” he stated, adding that being an independent artiste is very difficult,” he added.

When asked about his current relationship with Ground Up Chale, Twitch revealed that there is no longer any connection between them.

“We no get any relationship,” he said.

Reflecting on his time with the record label, however, the musician described the experience as enjoyable.

“Oh, it was fun but, you know, now we no really dey remember like that. Time go, you understand,” he added.

Twitch rose to prominence under Ground Up Chale, the record label that also helped launch the careers of several Ghanaian artistes, including Kwesi Arthur.

He has since continued his music career as an independent artiste.
