Growing up, many of us were captivated by the performances of iconic Ghanaian actors like Agya Koo, Kyeiwaa, and many others.

The thrills, drama, excitement, and even some moments of horror from their movies shaped our childhood memories.

But have you ever wondered what these stars were doing before they became household names?
Prior to the fame and spotlight, many of them walked very different paths.

Movies to Music: Some Ghanaian filmmakers who also became musicians

Let’s take a look at what some of Ghana’s most beloved actors did before rising to fame:

1. Kwadwo Nkansah "LilWin"

LilWin’s early life was marked by financial hardship and limited education. After dropping out of primary school in primary six, he took on various jobs including working as a mortuary attendant, cobbler, and petty trader.

Eventually, he found his ‘calling’ in acting and music, where he has become one of Ghana’s most recognised entertainers.

2. Rose Mensah "Kyeiwaa"

Rose Mensah, popularly known as Kyeiwaa, began her journey in entertainment as a singer with the African Brothers Band.

She was later introduced to the ‘Cantata TV’ drama series by Nana Bosomprah, a moment that launched her successful acting career and made her a household name.

3. Alex Adu Kofi "Agya Koo"

Originally from the Ashanti Region, Agya Koo lived in the suburbs of Accra where he worked as a cobbler (shoeshine boy).

His big break came when he appeared on a comedy show aired on GTV, where his talent was noticed.
He later transitioned into Kumawood movies, becoming one of its most iconic stars.

4. Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu

Prior to joining the acting world, Mercy Asiedu worked as a seamstress. She also performed in a small entertainment group, often entertaining church congregations during conventions.

Her entry into acting was facilitated by her godfather, Apostle Kwadwo Sarfo, who recognized her talent and supported her early steps in the industry.

5. Abraham Kofi Davis "Salinko"

Before becoming a Kumawood actor, Salinko was a comedian and radio personality.
He also had a passion for writing and producing films and stage plays, which eventually opened the door to his acting debut in the late 2010s.

These stories prove that the path to stardom is rarely straightforward, as these actors came from humble beginnings and carved their own unique paths to fame.
