Rapper Omar Sterling, a member of the R2Bees group, has opened up about his spiritual beliefs, explaining why he does not pray and how his understanding of spirituality shapes his views on prayer.
Speaking in an interview on Nandoleaks, the rapper explained that he does not see himself as separate from a higher being.
He said this is the reason he does not pray, as he believes doing so would be like praying to himself.
“I just feel like, like I said, I don’t separate the higher being from myself. So that’s why I don’t pray, because it means I will be praying to myself. When you think you are separate from the higher being, that’s when you pray,” he noted.
According to Omar Sterling, prayer can also be self-centred, especially when people ask God to favour them over others.

He cited the example of football matches involving Ghana to explain why he questions the idea of prayer.
The rapper recalled how, growing up, he struggled to understand why Ghanaians prayed for the national team to win whenever the country was preparing for a football match.
Omar Sterling believes that a team does not win a football match simply because people pray for its victory, but because it performs better than its opponent on the day.
“And even if you look at prayer, it’s very self-centred. Like, when I was young, I really used to be confused when Ghana was going to play football, and then the whole country would be saying, ‘Oh, let’s pray for Ghana to win.’ I’ll be asking myself, ‘But the team we dey go play, no be same God create them?’
“But because we’ve separated ourselves, we want the separate God to bless us and not the other team. But He created them too. So it’s the best team that wins, not your prayer,” he noted.
Omar Sterling explained that his spiritual beliefs also influence how he views events in his personal life.
Rather than attributing everything that happens to a separate God, he considers life itself a blessing.
He believes that being alive is something to be grateful for, regardless of what happens in one’s life.
