Ghanaian music duo R2Bees have finally shared the remarkable story behind the creation of their timeless hit song Slow Down, describing the record as a “diamond mined from dust.”
Speaking in a recent interview with Capital XTRA, Omar Sterling recounted the challenging circumstances under which the song was recorded, revealing that exhaustion, improvisation, and determination all played key roles in bringing the hit to life.
According to Omar Sterling, he and Mugeez had spent several days partying continuously from Thursday through Saturday and were physically drained. Despite their condition, Mugeez was determined to head into the studio and eventually convinced Omar Sterling to record instead of postponing the session until the next day.
"I remember telling Wiz, make we wait and go tomorrow; he was like, nah nah make we enter the studio," Omar said.
At the time, the duo was staying at Labadi Beach Hotel and needed their recording equipment transported from Tema. They contacted renowned sound engineer Posegee, who made the trip to deliver the gear.
However, another challenge emerged when Posegee arrived without a microphone filter, an essential studio accessory for recording vocals. Rather than cancel the session, the team improvised.

Omar Sterling revealed that Mugeez came up with a creative solution by using a bedside lamp covered with a blanket as a substitute setup, allowing them to continue recording despite the limitations.
"Mugeez actually brought the idea. We used a bedside lamp and then covered it with a bedsheet. It was incredible," he added.
The recording session eventually featured contributions from Omar Sterling, Mugeez, and Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, who all laid down their respective verses. According to Omar Sterling, Mugeez later added the final touch that transformed the song into what fans know today as Slow Down.
He further disclosed that immediately after hearing the completed record, Wizkid confidently predicted its success, declaring that the song was a hit.
Years after its release, Slow Down remains one of the biggest and most influential songs in R2Bees’ catalogue, continuing to resonate with music lovers across Africa and beyond. The revelation offers fans a rare glimpse into how one of the group’s most celebrated records emerged from humble beginnings and sheer creativity.
