'Prison does not change a person' - Nana Agradaa

Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa, has maintained that prison, although intended as a correctional facility, does not ‘change’ individuals.

Speaking at her church, Heaven Way Champion International Ministry on March 29, 2026, Agradaa, who was recently released from prison, said the facility rather emboldens people.

According to her, when the judge initially handed down a 15-year sentence to her, she believed it marked the end of her life.

She recounted that as she exited the courtroom and bloggers approached her for a comment, she only asked them to pray for her.

“Prison doesn’t change a person, it only increases your boldness. I said ‘tawfiakwa’ when the judge sentenced me to 15 years in prison. When bloggers asked me, ‘Mama Pat, what do you have to say about your sentencing?’ I only told them to pray for me,” she said.

Agradaa regained her freedom on March 3, 2026, after serving nine months in prison, representing two-thirds of her one-year sentence in line with Ghana’s remission rules.

She had initially been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of defrauding by false pretence and engaging in charlatanic advertisement.

However, that sentence was later reviewed and reduced.

Her conviction dates back to July 3, 2025, when an Accra Circuit Court found her culpable on multiple counts tied to a money-doubling scheme she promoted during church services at her Weija-based ministry.

She had allegedly promised congregants extraordinary financial returns in exchange for money, claims that failed to materialise and triggered complaints.

On February 5, 2026, the Amasaman High Court upheld the conviction but ruled that the original sentence was excessive.

The court consequently reduced the custodial term to 12 months and imposed a fine of 200 penalty units, equivalent to about GH¢2,400.
