Trader before tribunal for defrauding three persons

Accra (Greater Accra), 26 June A 34-year-old trader, Margaret Merfio, today appeared before an Accra circuit tribunal charged with fraud involving 23.8 million cedis. She pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to reappear on July eight.

Police Chief Inspector Benedicta Akolgo, told the tribunal, chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson Yeboah, that in May, last year, Alhaji Baba Seidu, a butcher, who wanted to travel overseas discussed the issue with a friend who introduced him to Margaret.

Margaret told Alhaji Seidu that she could help him to obtain a visa for Australia and demanded eight million cedis.

The prosecution said Margaret used the same trick to collect 7.8 million cedis from Mr. Stephen Addae, a company secretary and assured Seidu and Addae that they would travel in a month's time.

She also colected eight million cedis from Mr. Isaac Okoe, a storekeeper to arrange for him to buy a house then being offered for sale. When Mr. Okoe and Mr. Addae, who are friends, realised that they had been defrauded, they informed the police whose investigations led to her arrest. gri.
