The newly constituted board of Asante Kotoko has been charged by the club’s owner Otumfour Osei Tutu II to begin the process of establishing a women’s football team.

Asante Kotoko originally recognized as a sporting club has solely operated as a men’s team since its formation in August 1935.

The club has chalked great feats in Ghana and African football although they have failed to replicate their continental dominance in the last 20 years.

In an attempt to shape a new direction and adopt a new model for the club, the Manhyia Palace spearheaded by Otumfour Osei Tutu II has set up a 9 member board headed by Executive Chairman Kwame Kyei.

Other members of the Board include Mr. Joseph Yaw Adu, Mr. Jude Arthur, Mr. Kwamina Ansah, Mr. Kwadwo Boateng Genfi, and Mrs. Evelyn Nsiah Asare.

The rest are Baffour Kwame Kusi, Otumfour’s Ankobeahene, Alhaji Abu Lamin, and Mr. Kwasi Osei Ofori.

During the inauguration of the board, the Chief of Staff of the Manhyia Palace, Kofi Badu shared with them the expectations of the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom who doubles as the team’s owner.

He said “Kotoko has the task now of responding to FIFA’s directive to open its doors women’s football.

“And also to expand beyond football to embrace other sports such as boxing, tennis, athletics, table tennis, always bearing in mind sports that offer our young men and women the possibilities for professional careers,” he noted.

The new board will have a mandate that runs for three years. Setting go a women’s team will make Kotoko the first elite team in Ghana to run such a model.
