Nokus fails to survive

Multichoice Ghana organised a luncheon in Accra last week in honour of Nana Kwame Sarpong (aka Nokus) Ghana’s rep who was evicted from the reality TV show, ‘Survivor Africa’. Nokus was sent packing after some of the contestants who had initially approached him for help to vote out a tribe member, turned around and betrayed him.

In the episode which saw Nana evicted, Jeremiah, who had earlier approached Nana to form an alliance, went behind him to connive with Tebby, Derrick, Leonard and Nike to kick the Ghanaian out of the ‘Survivor’ island. After finding out those who voted him out, Nana admits his eviction at tribal counsel (a weekly session where contestants meet to evict an ‘undesirable’) was inevitable. Being the sixth person to be sent off the island, Nokus will, however, be returning to the Island as a member of the jury which will decide on the eventual winner of the show’s 100 thousand-dollar prize money.

At the luncheon, Nana spoke about the harsh conditions he was exposed to during the competition. But he says it is an experience he will never forget. “I entered ‘Survivor Africa’ because at the time, I thought I had already been through a lot rough times in life and [the competition] presented another opportunity for me to test my tenacity.” He says. “But for the most part, it was the adventure, experience and exposure it had to offer. A hundred thousand dollars is big money but my initial motivation wasn’t the money. It was a strong desire to prove something to myself and once again, I’ve proven to myself I can stand any challenge that comes my way. I think I’ve seen all there is to see.”

However, Nokus says, he will not compete in the competition again if given the chance. “Nothing at all will make me go back if given a second chance.”

He says he was evicted because he ran out of luck. “On hindsight, I can’t say I will play the game any differently if given a second shot. From what I experienced on the island and in my dealings with other contestants, it’s not how good one plays his game, but it will all come down to a great deal of luck for one to be the ultimate winner.”

‘Survivor Africa’ was taped in July on an island in Panama and it started airing on M-Net on the 3rd of September. The show’s winner will be known in November.
