Would you ever sleep with your superior to secure your employment?
Miriam Appiah is a brilliant University Graduate who has been jobless for the past six (6) years. She holds a degree in Marketing but has failed to secure a job in corresponding fields.
She said… “My life has been the epitome of real frustration and pain because I have literally become a burden and a disgrace to my family. I excelled in my final exam with a GPA of 3.39 and I can recall the endless jubilation that day. I was extremely proud of myself and my joy knew no bounds.
After a successful one year of serving the nation in the upper east region of Ghana as a teacher, I returned to Accra with high hopes of securing a job immediately; my mother’s eyes gleamed with so much faith and I knew it was time to make her proud.
I sent applications round to several companies, both known and unknown, but after several months of hectic follow ups and being tossed around no one was willing to take me in. before I realized, three (3) years had already gone by and I was still unemployed.
“My situation was incomprehensible… I was one of the top students of my batch and with my kind of GPA I should be considered a hot commodity on the business market. Aside my impeccable academic record, I had very dazzling features and that perfectly complimented my intelligence.
Two (2) additional years came by and I was still in the same situation as I was before; my parents, despite their support, couldn’t hide their anxiety. They were convinced that my predicament was more of a spiritual crisis than physical. After two (2) months of continuous prayer coupled with daily job hunts, my hope was finally restored.
One morning at my father’s washing bay, I met Mr. Richard Stewart, the chief Executive Officer for one of the renowned media houses in Ghana. I instantly told him about my woes and he immediately assured me that everything was going to be fine. Two weeks after my encounter with him, he requested that I dropped my CV with his company; like magic, his secretary called the next day and asked me to come for my appointment letter. Can you imagine? After six (6) years of battling with the unemployment syndrome, I finally emerged victorious. Mr. Stewart was very friendly and grew fond of me each passing day.
One afternoon he invited me to have lunch with him in one of the 5 star hotels in the country and he wasn’t taking no for an answer. He complimented my looks throughout the meal and that made me feel totally uncomfortable; these lunch invitations kept coming in everyday for about a month. On one such ‘dates’ he asked me to be his girlfriend which I immediately turned down.
He became very furious and started ranting on how he was the reason behind my employment and how he has the power to terminate my appointment in a snap and with that, he stormed out of the room in a full blown anger. Before that, he always used to make passes at me and how sexy he thought my legs looked… I guess I was too naive not to have noticed all of that from the beginning to realize that he only wanted a piece of my cake. I need this job very much and I am not ready to go back to being the useless burden I was six (6) years ago but I can’t have sex with my boss.
My salary is very attractive and I get to enjoy other employment allowances…my life has been totally transformed but I can’t lose my dignity as a woman by using sex as a tool to secure my employment. What if God punishes me for sleeping with a married man? Do I give in or resign?”
What would you if you were in shoes? six (6) more years of unemployment or one simple night of sex with your boss?
