LG Tournament: Eagles, Black Stars on war path

Ghana’s Black Stars got their twinkling stars dimmed in the quarter finals of the 2002 Nations Cup in Mali. Their conquerors, the Super Eagles walked off the pitch with a certain air that angered their West African nieghbours.

The defeat more than anything else rekindled the lingering rivalry between them. And Ghana who have not forgotten the bloody nose have always geared for a revenge.

Perhaps, today’s match courtesy the LG Electronics Tournament offers them ample avenue to seek the pound of flesh from the Eagles whose streaks of good results since Christian Chukwu assumed the position of chief coach has being inspirational.

Late last year, Chukwu led his team entirely made up of home-based to trounce the Black Stars on home soil. The defeat added salt to earlier injury on the wounds of the Ghanaians who subsequently resolved to traverse oceans to repay Nigeria in her own coins.

In today’s match, 17 players comprising some five foreign-based are in to do battle for Ghana against Nigeria Derek Boatoeng, who as a thorn in the flesh of the Eagles in Mali, believe the encounter was all they have waited for to punish the Eagles for humiliating them two-times in a year.

But Chukwu would hear no such boast as he promised to sustain the status quo today. He was confident the Eagles would tower higher than the Black Stars and go ahead to defeat the eventual winner between Cameroon and defending champions Iran.

Meanwhile, African Champions and Iran, are to take to the pitch after the Nigeria/Ghana match. The match comes up 6:30 p.m. while the Eagles game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
