Municipal Assembly rewards outstanding teachers

Abesim (B/A), 19, GNA- Mr Ignatius Baffuor-Awuah, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) on Friday noted that indiscipline on the part of some students was is affecting standard of education in the country. He said some students threaten to beat teachers and even go to the extent of soiling the school compound with excreta, he said. He was speaking at the 2002 and 2003 municipal award ceremony for teachers who excelled in their various fields. It was organized by the Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Education Directorate at Abesim near Sunyani.

It had the theme "Quality teachers for quality education". Eighteen teachers and five non-teaching staffs were awarded with prizes. The first and the second prizes were a 21 inches and 14 inches coloured Television respectively.

He said it is disheartening to know that students have taken to drinking and smoking and that affected their education. He announced that best performing schools, which have been persistent in their performance and teachers in deprived communities, would be rewarded next year.

He commended the award winners for their good performance. Reverend Williwise K. Kusi Municipal Director of Education thanked the teachers for their outstanding performances for the Sunyani Municipal to be among the first 10 Districts in the region in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) since 2000.
