Sixth Battalion Turns 33 Years As A Unit

Tamale - Officers and men of the Sixth Battalion of Infantry in Tamale and their wives today went on a three-hour route march through the principal streets as part of activities marking the 33rd anniversary of the unit. The marchers, led by the Commanding Officer, Lt.-Colonel Hope Agbenuzah, had earlier undertaken clean-up exercises at the barracks and in town during which they planted about 1,000 tree seedlings. The week-long celebration on the theme ''the Ghana Armed Forces as a Catalyst for Sustainable Development in a Clean and Healthy Environment'', is dedicated to all those who have served the Infantry since its inception in May 1964. It is also to enable the personnel of the unit to take stock of their past activities and plan for the future. Addressing the soldiers, Colonel Agbenuzah said the Infantry has gone through many transformations making it one of the best units in the Ghana Armed Forces and ''imbued its members with a high degree of esprit de corps and a sense of mission.'' He said the founding fathers of the unit had blazed a trail that has since been improved upon. ''They have also bequeathed to us a precious legacy of a great and noble unit with a rich military tradition'' and thanked all those who have made the administration of the unit a success.
