Korle Bu fees increase too harsh

Accra (Greater Accra) 8th Sept. '99 - A concerned citizen on Tuesday described the over 200 per cent increase in fees announced by Korle-Bu teaching Hospital Administration as a "Deadly Weapon" flung at the low income group and poor farmers. The concerned citizen, Nii Amoo Dodoo, appealed to Parliament, Council of State, National House of Chiefs, Christian Council of Ghana, Islamic Council, and Concerned Citizens Association to intervene and save the lives of the poor before it was too late. Nii Dodoo said the medical and nursing professions are sacrificial and demand that practitioners show mercy, especially for the poor, who cannot afford to pay for their health care. The re-opening of schools with its attendant payment of fees, the high charges would worsen the already precarious situation of the majority of Ghanaians There is the need for the Korle Bu authorities to take a second look at the increases, with a view to bringing them a little lower, Nii Dodoo said.
