Farmer fined one million cedis for stealing fowl

Asamankese, Sept 28, GNA - Odoi Mensah, a farmer who stole a fowl valued at 30,000 cedis and threatened to kill the owner of the fowl after eating it, had been fined one million cedis by the Asamankese Circuit Court. Mensah, who was convicted on his own plea, will go to prison for 12 months in default.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector R. A. Sappor told the court that on August 28, Mr Christopher Lamptey detected theft of one of his fowls at Atobriso Number One, near Asuom in the Eastern Region. He learnt from the sister of Mensah that it was her brother (the convict) who stole the fowl.

Mensah was summoned to appear before the village chief but he refused and went into hiding until September 09 when he emerged from his hideout and attacked the complainant with a sharp knife. He said in a scuffle the Mr Lamptey over-powered the accused with the help of passers-by and took him to the police station.
