Wa Police commend media for peaceful Yuletide

Wa, Jan. 02, GNA - Mr George Ankobil, Upper West Regional Police Commander on Tuesday commended the media for collaborating with the police and other stakeholders effectively to prevent crime, chaos and anarchy during the Christmas, Eid-Ul-Adha and New Year celebrations in the Wa Municipality. He said while most of the messages from the media assisted to prevent crime and accidents, people also became conscious of the consequences of such social vices hence the peaceful festivities marked in the region. "While some of the people enjoyed the festivities in their homes with loud music and dancing, others chose to make it big social centres where they could meet a lot of friends and loved ones in the Wa Municipality," he added.

The Upper West Regional Police Commander made the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after visits to some social centres and the police station to find out about the celebrations. He said crime and accidents in the Wa Municipality were on the decline due to the numerous educational programmes by organisations, institutions and the media throughout the region. The Upper West Regional Police Commander noted that the educational programmes would not end with the festivities, but continued to ensure that crime and other anti-social activities were reduced in the region. Police Inspector Frimpong, Station Officer at Wa Police Station told the GNA that only two young boys were arrested for attempting to steal goats at Poyentanga in the Wa West District.

At Free Port, a popular drinking spot in the municipality, the celebrants danced to highlife music deep into the night, while others at TIMPOL were treated to local Dagare music to usher in the New Year. All the churches were also filled to capacity amid singing and dancing while the streets were busy as most of the celebrants moved about in jubilant mood throughout the night until the New Year.
