British Naval Ship To Visit Ghana

Accra HMS Somerset, one of the British Royal Navy's most modern Frigates, will visit Ghana on a goodwill mission from May 13 to 16. A statement from the British High commission today, said the ship, under the command of Commander Martin Westwood, has 186 officers and ratings. "It is the mainstay of the Royal Navy's surface fleet and is heavily armed". The ship was launched in 1994 and is the fourth to carry the name Somerset. The first Somerset was an 80-gun ship of the line built at Chatham in 1698. The statement said during the visit, HMS Somerset will be used as a platform for a Defence Industry Day at which a number of British firms will mount presentations. The exhibitors include ALVIS UK Ltd, British Aerospace, Babcock, J & S Franklin, Alan Skelton Associates, Lloyds bank and Siemens Plessey.
