Dear GhanaWeb: I lost everything after betraying the only woman who truly loved me

Dear GhanaWeb,

My life is in complete ruins, and I take full responsibility for it. I have hurt the one person who loved me genuinely, and now I am left with regret, pain, and consequences I never imagined I would face.

I don’t know if my wife will ever forgive me, but the truth is, I don’t want to lose her. I still love her deeply, even though I failed her in every possible way.

We started our marriage with hope and dreams like every young couple. But not long after, life dealt us a heavy blow. I lost my job during the COVID period, and everything changed. I became frustrated, withdrawn, and insecure. But through it all, my wife stood by me like a rock.

She carried our home on her shoulders without complaint. She brought her entire salary home every month just so I wouldn’t feel useless. She supported me emotionally and financially. In fact, she went as far as taking a loan from her workplace to sponsor my master’s degree, believing that better days would come for us.

In early 2022, I secured a well-paying job. Life improved. We could finally breathe again. But instead of appreciating the woman who sacrificed everything for me, I became the very thing I once feared, a selfish, careless husband. I started cheating.

At first, it felt like harmless fun. Then it became a habit. Before I realised it, I was living a double life. I moved from one woman to another, spending money recklessly and neglecting my home completely.

My wife was heavily pregnant during this time, yet I showed her no care. I ignored her needs, her pain, and her cries. There was even a time I left the house for an entire month just to avoid her, choosing instead to stay in a hotel and chase temporary pleasures.

When she finally gave birth, I didn’t even go to the hospital to see her. She later moved to her mother’s house with our baby, and in the four months she stayed there, I visited only once. That alone should tell you the kind of man I had become.

When she eventually returned home, she still tried to rebuild what was left of our marriage. She cooked, cleaned, cared for our child, and still tried to care for me, but I treated her like she meant nothing.

I would come home late sometimes, reeking of alcohol and perfume that wasn’t hers. She cried, begged, and pleaded with me to change, to remember the home we were building together, but I ignored her completely.

I told her she was overreacting. I told her she should be grateful I was providing. What she didn’t know was that things had gone far worse than she imagined. Two of the women I was seeing got pregnant.

At first, I denied responsibility, but the truth eventually came out. One child was born barely a year after my wife had delivered, and the second followed shortly after. That was when my life began to spiral out of control.

The women constantly demanded money for hospital bills, feeding, rent, and school fees. My salary, which once seemed enough, suddenly became insufficient. The pressure was overwhelming.

They called me day and night. When I delayed sending money, they insulted me and threatened to come to my house, and sometimes, they did.

At home, my wife began to notice everything: the strange calls, the tension, the secrets. The atmosphere in the house became unbearable. Then came the biggest shock of my life.

I started experiencing severe stomach pain and bleeding. Like everything else in my life, I ignored it until one day, I collapsed at work. After several tests at the hospital, the doctors gave me news that shattered me.

I was diagnosed with colon cancer. The treatment is extremely expensive, including surgery, chemotherapy, and medications. The bills keep piling up every day.

The same women I risked my marriage for have shown no sympathy. They only call when they need money for their children. They don’t care about my condition.

At home, my wife saw everything unfold. She saw the hospital bills, the calls from the other women, and the life I had been hiding from her.

One evening, she sat me down. Her face was calm, but her eyes were empty, void of the love she once had for me. She said she was tired.

Then she packed her things, carried our child, and walked out of the house I had abandoned so many times. This time, she didn’t look back. That was the moment I realised how alone I truly am.

Now, I am battling a life-threatening illness, drowning in financial pressure, and living with the consequences of my own actions. The woman who stood by me when I had nothing is gone, and I don’t know if I deserve another chance.

I am filled with regret every single day.

After everything I have done, is it too late to ask for forgiveness and hope that my wife will ever return to me? I need your advice on how to get her to return home.
