Parents agree on school reopening postponement

Bawku (U/E), May 4, GNA - Majority of parents and guardians of wards in basic schools in the Bawku Municipality have said they see nothing wrong with the postponement of the reopening date of schools to pave way for the funeral Madam Hawa Yakubu.

They said it was a glowing tribute to the late Hawa whose warmth could be felt in every household in the municipality.

In randomly conducted interviews with the Ghana New Agency (GNA), the parents were of the view that considering the stature of the late Hawa attained in politics, most of pupils, especially the girl-child, could emulate her sterling qualities.

They said this could serve as a boast to girl-child education and women participation in politics in the area.

Alhaji Shamsuudeen Baba-Yaro, a businessman, said if provision could be made by the educational authorities to meet the lost hours then he had nothing against the postponement.

However, a few parents expressed worry over the postponement and said it was not right to joke with the future of the children. They said if the whole week was devoted to the funeral of an individual, at the expense of the future of children, then it amount to financial loss to the state.

Mr. Mashood Aziz, the Bawku Central NDC Deputy Treasurer, said though the late Hawa was a national asset, only Friday should have been declared as a Regional Holiday for all schools in the region. He said the Chief Justice, who was the 4th in line to the presidency, was not accorded that and wondered why a 1st National vice-chairperson of a party should receive that.

Mr Aziz said he has no qualms with the educational authorities if the lost hours could be made up before the end of the academic year. Most teachers have welcomed the directive. A head teacher said it has even afforded the teaching staff the opportunity to go for their salaries and prepare for the new term.
