Ghanaians are probably the most religious people in the world and these include a large percentage of Muslims, Christians, Traditionalists and other smaller religious group, crime, corruption and immorality are some of the highest vices.

Fridays and Sundays in any part of Ghana will reveal how much Ghanaians take religion seriously but this has still not deterred most religious people from committing crime, corruption and immorality. One is therefore tempted to ask why Ghanaians are this religious even yet it does not reflect in their character and attitudes.

These are five reasons why most Ghanaians are religious.

1. Escape

Most Ghanaians see religion as way of escaping from their problems and most believe they can pour out their frustrations to God. Ghanaians will rather pray over economic crisis, hardship, unemployment family problems and other societal problems rather than solve it. The church and mosques are seen as a citadel from oppression and trial.

2. Motivation

Religious leaders in Ghana have become motivational speakers and you find them preaching messages of prosperity in their churches and mosques over morality. The general Ghanaian church attendant wants a prophecy in their life or some mind-blowing miracles to suffice. The motivation to go to church every day is because they want a miracle. Almost all the rich and successful men of God in Ghana are the prophecy, motivational and prosperity preachers.

3. Miracles

Ghanaians believe in miracles so much than putting in effort to work or study. Miracle workers in Ghana have churches that are filled to the brim. It’s only in Ghana that a man like Obinim will sleep his junior pastor’s wife and still have such a massive following. Most Ghanaians will attend a 3-day church program and neglect work because they’ve heard there’ll be miracles. Fake Pastors and Imam continue to scam unsuspecting believers because they’re busily chasing nonexistent miraculous phone calls and visa to abroad.

Nigerians love miracles to a fault and would not mind attending a religious program if he hears how miracles are performed there.

4. Laziness

Ghanaians are hardworking people only when they’re working abroad. Most people in Ghana can go to church all month but will complain if they’re working all month. They’ll fast and pray every day for divine money and material things instead of working for such things. It is no surprise to see people attend religious programs all through the week instead of looking for their daily bread.

5. Fear

Africans are generally superstitious and the fear of the unknown keeps them on their toes. The fact that they have a superior protector or a divine power calms them. Pastors and Imams who can are able to “arrest” witches, wizards and demons are patronized more than their counterparts who are seen as not so powerful.
