Founder and Leader of the National Liberation Congress (NLC), Stephen Atubiga, has raised concerns about alleged internal divisions within President John Dramani Mahama’s government, warning that the situation could fuel anger among National Democratic Congress (NDC) grassroots supporters ahead of the 2028 elections.
According to him, if the situation is not well handled, it could fuel anger National Democratic Congress (NDC) grass root supporters ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a post shared on his social media page on October 21, 2026, he entreated individuals close to the President to take strategic steps to support his administration and also coordinate the work of the government and the party.
He warned that failure to address the alleged divisions could lead to growing resentment among party supporters as the next general election approaches.
"My brothers, all is not well on the ground behind big brother JDM's government. If you do not immediately take strategic positions behind the scenes to support JDM and help him run his government alongside the party structure — just as former President Nana Akufo-Addo's family did for him during his crisis — you will see stones thrown at leadership towards the 2028 elections. People will remove their shoes and sandals and run for their lives from the anger of the grassroots,” he said.
Atubiga also alleged that the relationship between the government and the NDC party structure had become strained, claiming that some party leaders were boycotting Cabinet meetings and appointment committees.
According to him, the alleged absence of some party leaders from appointment processes was allowing unsuitable individuals to occupy strategic positions, a situation he said was affecting the party.
"Are you all pretending you don't know that JDM's government is collapsing internally? Shame on us all.
"The NDC party leadership is boycotting Cabinet meetings. Most of them are boycotting appointment committees, allowing wrong people to be appointed into strategic positions, and the NDC is paying the price", he noted.
He further claimed that sector ministers were struggling to perform their duties because of delays in the release of funds, which he attributed to requirements imposed by the Finance Minister.
“All his sector Ministers are not functioning because funds are not being released by the Finance Minister. The requirement for clearance from the Finance Minister has crippled the Ministers,” Atubiga alleged.
Atubiga also criticised what he described as public statements by elements within the NDC party structure that undermine the President and his government.
He questioned why the party’s leadership would act in ways he believes weaken an administration that emerged from the party’s own political efforts.
"Less than 10,000 of our boys and girls — grassroots foot soldiers and party security across all 276 constituencies who broke their backs during the elections — have been left to rot. How can you sack our own boys, in their own uniform, from the Castle? Where should they go? Will we not need them in 2028?", he added.
