A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Kojo Opoku Razak, has admonished party bigwigs against what he called excessive interference in the party’s running mate selection, urging them to give Dr Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, the room to pick his running mate.
According to Dr Opoku, the party leader must be afforded the free hand and space to select his partner for the 2028 elections.
In a Facebook post, Dr Opoku noted that the NPP and its members should follow the established process that led to the elevation of the late Aliu Mahama, Professor John Evans Atta Mills and others to the vice-presidential position.
He emphasised that Dr Bawumia should be given full latitude to choose his preferred candidate, taking into consideration his ability to work effectively with the selected individual.
“If you respect Bawumia as the Leader of the Party, you will undoubtedly give him the peace and space to nominate his preferred running mate at his own time. Aliu Mahama never campaigned to become a running mate, yet he was chosen.
“Similarly, Bawumia never campaigned to become a running mate, yet he was chosen. Kow Arkaah, Atta Mills, John Mahama, Amissah-Arthur, & Jane Naana Opoku never campaigned to become a running mate, yet they were all chosen,” he wrote.
Dr Opoku’s admonition comes amid widespread speculation about the potential running mate for Dr Bawumia, who secured the backing of NPP delegates to represent the party in the 2028 elections.

The NPP is seeking to recover from the setback of the 2024 elections. With confidence high within the party and Dr Bawumia at the helm, many believe the party is well positioned to return to power.
The party will also need to claw back some of the parliamentary seats it lost in 2024, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) currently controls nearly two-thirds of the 275 seats in the House.
