The Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has pledged to help mobilise support for the completion of the National Cathedral if approved by Parliament.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Bawku Central MP said he would engage the Christian community and President John Dramani Mahama on the project.

He said he would support efforts to continue the construction if the Christian community remains committed to the completion of the project and the President agrees to its continuation.

“If I am approved by this house and I become the minister responsible for Chieftaincy Affairs, I will engage the leadership of the Christian community in this country.

“And I want to assure you that if they remain committed to the construction of a national cathedral, I will engage the president, and if it is the wish of the president, I will wholeheartedly support and mobilize for the project to be continued and, God willing, completed,” he said.

It will be recalled that following an audit report, President John Dramani Mahama ordered the dissolution of the National Cathedral Secretariat and began legal processes to dissolve its Board of Trustees.

The directive, announced by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, took effect on May 1, 2025.

The decision followed a Deloitte and Touche audit into the operations of the National Cathedral Secretariat from 2021 to 2023.

The audit uncovered several financial irregularities, procurement breaches and what it described as a “general lack of due process.”
